Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI)
Severe and persistent mental health conditions, often referred to as severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), are a subset of mental health disorders characterized by their chronic nature and significant impairment in functioning. These conditions typically include disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe forms of major depressive disorder.
"Severe" in this context indicates that the symptoms and functional impairment are profound, often leading to difficulties in daily life activities such as maintaining employment, managing personal relationships, and taking care of oneself.
"Persistent" indicates that these conditions are enduring and often last for an extended period, typically requiring ongoing treatment and support. Despite treatment, individuals with severe and persistent mental health conditions may continue to experience symptoms and functional limitations.
These conditions often require comprehensive and long-term treatment approaches, including medication, psychotherapy, and various forms of support services to help individuals manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
